Notpla Food Containers
Because convenience doesn't have to cost the world

We have carefully re-engineered the humble food container to eliminate waste and make the planet a healthier place, all while preserving the convenience we've become use to. Where conventional containers have petrol-based coatings that stick around forever, we've created a 100% natural seaweed coating. Once finished, the whole package can be composted and disappears without a trace—just like a fruit peel.

From extractive, to regenerative

From the forests below the sea comes our greatest ally in making this innovation: Seaweed grows quickly, and needs no freshwater, land or fertiliser. It captures carbon and makes the surrounding waters less acidic. Seaweed forests are biodiverse, and can even filter out pollution from human activities. The more we grow of it, the better the effect.

And the best part: worms, fungi and microbes love it. Instead of toxic waste, our containers become food for other living organisms.

Designed for impact at scale

While the beginning and end of our material's lifecycle are pristinely natural, it flows through industrial manufacturing and distribution at scale in between. The bigger this process gets, the more waste it takes out of the ecosystem. To date, we have replaced over 3.5 million units of plastic food containers, and every minute this number goes up.

Your commonly asked questions

Is Notpla packaging compliant with the EU Single Use Plastic Directive?

Yes, Notpla's coating is 100% natural, derived only from seaweed and is non-chemically modified, meaning it sits outside of the EU's Single-use Plastic Directive definition of plastic. Notpla Coating is currently the only coating on the market to have been verified by a government as meeting this criteria.

Can Notpla's packaging be recycled?

Yes, Notpla has been certified as EN13430 compliant and will not contaminate standard paper waste streams.

What happens if Notpla ends up in nature?

Unfortunately, much of the packaging used today will not be recycled or reach composting. If Notpla materials are littered, they will still biodegrade naturally just like a piece of seaweed on the beach and - unlike plastic, bioplastic or PFAS - will not release microplastics or forever chemicals into nature.

Is Notpla's packaging allergenic?

No, Notpla Coating contains no allergens.

Can I have it with my company's branding?

Yes, a bespoke printing service is available with MOQs from just 50k units. With everything being designed here in London, it can take as little as 4-6 weeks from artwork sign-off to production. Email customerservice@notpla.com for more info.
